Uganda, officially known as the Republic of Uganda, is a landlocked country located in East Africa. It’s bordered by Kenya to the east, South Sudan to the north, the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the west, Rwanda to the southwest, and Tanzania to the south. The country also includes a significant portion of Lake Victoria, which it shares with Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda is part of the African Great Lakes region, lies within the Nile basin, and has a varied but generally equatorial climate. As of 2023, Uganda has an estimated population of around 47.7 million people, with approximately 8.5 million living in the capital and largest city, Kampala.

The nation is named after the Buganda kingdom, which covers a large part of the south, including Kampala. Uganda gained independence from the United Kingdom on October 9, 1962. The official languages are English and Swahili, and the country has a diverse cultural landscape with many languages spoken, including Luganda, Ateso, Lango, Acholi, Runyoro, Runyankole, Rukiga, Luo, Rutooro, Samia, Jopadhola, and Lusoga.
